Description

Atlas Launch Vehicle Attitude Reference Subsystem Gyro, measuring 11″ x 11″ x 9″ and weighing 27 lbs, the front bears an American Gyro (a division of Tamar Electronics) parts label that reads: “Attitude Reference Subsystem, Model GR 10A-1, General Dynamics / Convair Part No 12-03100-3, Mfr. Part No. 22650, Mfr. Serial No. 1888-4.” The subsystem features a “Free Gyro” on either side, with their respective parts labels reading “Model FB45SM-6, Dwg No. U/N 188-3, Mfg. Pt. No. 24670, Serial No. 1888-4” and “Model FB45SM-6, Mfg. Pt. No. 21830, Serial No. 1888-4.” In fine condition.

The gyro in the Attitude Reference Subsystem played a crucial role in maintaining the rocket's stability and orientation during flight. It functioned as an attitude reference sensor, providing information about the rocket's current orientation in terms of pitch, roll, and yaw angles. This information was used by the rocket's guidance and control system to make necessary adjustments to the rocket's engine thrust and steering mechanisms, ensuring that the rocket followed its intended trajectory accurately.
