Paris, in part: “General Pershing has received your letter of December 14th, requesting him to act as Honorary President of the Association you are planning to organize, to be composed of the Americans on whom the French Government has conferred the cross of the Legion of Honor. While he appreciates very much this desire on your part, he is very sorry that he cannot accept…General Pershing wished me to convey his personal thanks for the courtesy of your letter.” In fine condition. After World War I, Marshall became an aide-de-camp to John J. Pershing, who was then the Army's Chief of Staff.
