Description

"Without delay," Maury requests any "Topographical sketches, notes, or other information in your possession bearing upon the County of the Navajoes"

Officer in the United States Army and a major general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War (1822-1900) who also served as an instructor at West Point and was the author of military training books. Uncommon LS, one page, 7.75 x 9.75, August 26, 1860. Addressed from Head Quarters, Department of New Mexico in Santa Fe, a letter from Dabney H. Maury as assistant adjutant general, sent to Lieutenant John V. DuBois at Camp Winfield Scott. In full: “The Commanding Officer has directed me to write to you and request that you will as soon as possible forward to these Head Quarters, any Topographical sketches, notes, or other information in your possession bearing upon the County of the Navajoes. He has been informed that you probably will be able to afford more useful information upon this subject than any other officer in the Department and as it may be of very great importance just now he hopes you will be able to do so without delay. In fine condition, with a small hole touching one word of text. Accompanied by a printed General Orders from the War Department dated June 25, 1861, relating to Maury's “treasonable designs against the Government of the United States.”

When the Civil War began, Maury was the Assistant Adjutant General in the New Mexico Territory, based in Santa Fe. Hearing the news of the firing on Fort Sumter, he resigned from the United States Army and traveled back to Virginia. He entered the Confederate Army as a colonel, serving as an Adjutant General, then was Chief of Staff under General Earl Van Dorn. Following the Battle of Pea Ridge, he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general and assigned to field command. Maury led a division at the Second Battle of Corinth and was appointed major general in November 1862. He participated in army operations around Vicksburg, Mississippi, and in the defense of Mobile, Alabama. In the latter military campaign, Maury commanded the Department of the Gulf.
