Appleton & Company, in part: "Pardon my too long deferred acknowledgment of your attention in sending me a copy of the first volume of the New American Encyclopedia. The excellent reputations of the Editors for ability & industry is well sustained by the articles it contains,—no mere reproductions of other men's labors, but original & well considered accounts & discussions of their various subjects,—brief, necessarily, not yet as full and complete as the nature of such a work permits."
