American politician (1808-1873) who served as secretary of the treasury for the first three years of Abraham Lincoln's term, after which Lincoln appointed him chief justice of the Supreme Court. In that role Chase presided over the 1868 impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson. AQS on an off-white 4.75 x 3.25 sheet, in full: "'His will is perfect freedom,' S. P. Chase, May 31, 1868." A small engraved portrait is affixed to the lower left corner. In fine condition, with a horizontal fold and slight brushing to ink.
