Description

Two-term U.S. Representative (1816-1906) who later became a multimillionaire financier, credited with originating the system of 'puts and calls' in the buying and selling of stock. ALS, one page, 5 x 7.75, personal letterhead, July 2, 1881. Handwritten letter to "Postmaster Pearson," in part: "I understand there is an opening for a promotion, and if so, I desire to say a word in favor of C. W. Lewis…Mr. Lewis has been a carrier for eleven years and so far as we have knowledge, & experience he has been honest, faithful and competent." In fine condition.
