American businessman (1826-1878) who served as president of the Western Union Telegraph Company. Civil War-dated ALS signed "Will'm Orton," two pages, 5 x 8, August 1, 1862. Handwritten letter from New York, addressed to Thomas Hillhouse, the Adjutant General of New York, in part: "My friend Mr. S. W. Wood calls upon you with a requisition for a gun of which he is owner & patenter, and I respectfully solicit for the application careful consideration. Altho, not a 'military' man I understand a gun pretty well, and have used this of Mr. Wood with great satisfaction. I believe it demonstrates satisfactorily, that a breach-loading can now be placed in the hands of theā¦soldier with entire safety-and his ability to injure his enemy increased ten fold." In fine condition, with some light stains to the first page.
