Description

English statesman (1732-1818) who became the first de facto Governor-General of India from 1773 to 1785. He was accused of corruption and impeached in 1787, but after a long trial he was acquitted in 1795. LS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.5 x 9, March 21, 1774. Letter to Robert Palk, an officer of the British East India Company who served as Governor of the Madras Presidency. In part: "I have delivered to Mr. Ellis, a gentleman who goes a passenger in this ship, a Book containing the Journal of my Transactions…I hope you will find at least variety, and something of novelty to engage your curiosity to read it through I request that it may be shewn to Mr. Sullivan and Mr. Du Pre, and to Sir George Colbrooke, if you think he will desire to see it. I do not desire that any person besides should see it, and request that none other may, unless you judge it may do me service, which I do not think it will, except with those who wish me well already." A ticket for the forty-fourth day of the trial of Warren Hastings, affixed to a larger sheet, is attached. In fine condition.
