Description

Hamilton writes concerning a balance due on a "collection of Medals"

British ambassador to the Kingdom of Naples, antiquarian, archaeologist, and vulcanologist who studied Mount Vesuvius (1731-1803), though perhaps best known as husband of Emma Hamilton, famed as Horatio Nelson's mistress. ALS signed “Wm. Hamilton,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.25 x 9, March 21, 1769. Handwritten letter to a Lord, in part: "I hope the collection of Medals which I sent to my good friend the late Earl of Morton arrived safe tho' I fear that you had the misfortune of losing his Lordship before they cou'd possibly have reached England. His Lp. had given me a commission to go as far as 1000£ for the medals but by management I made the purchase for 800£ which sum was paid to my account to Geo. Ross Esqr., my agent…there is a ballance due to me of 38£. I had Lord Morton's directions to draw upon him for this ballance when I receiv'd the unfortunate news of his death." In fine condition, with a rusty circular paperclip impression to the edge and slight paper loss to one corner (affecting a single word).
