TLS as president, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, April 27, 1916. Letter to novelist Margaret Deland, who would be awarded a cross from the Legion of Honor for her relief work in France during World War I. In full: "I need not tell you how my heart goes out toward the sufferers in Europe, but I have not thought that it was wise in any case to associate myself with subscriptions for the relief of wounded soldiers. I am sure that you will appreciate the necessary delicacy of my position in this matter." In fine condition. It was not until a year later, on April 6, 1917, the United States entered World War I.
