Civil War general and Connecticut politician (1826-1905) who served as governor, representative, and senator. ALS signed “J. R. Hawley,” one page, 7.75 x 10, Senate Chamber letterhead, March 31, 1890. Letter to S. Ogden Bradley, in part: "I am sure I have already received an invitation to be present at the dedication of the soldiers' monument at Tarrytown, and that I was forced to decline. For many years I have had invitations to speak in Connecticut on Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, and it has been seldom that I have spoken elsewhere on those days." In fine condition.
