Description

ALS in French, one page both sides, 5.25 x 7.25, October 4, 1864. The letter, in part (loosely translated): "I’ve delayed a bit to answer you, desiring to give you some positive information. Unfortunately, I cannot apprise you where the edition of your work is [regarding sales and finances]. It would be necessary to do an inventory, and we would still not have an exact figure, because all the returns from the provinces will not be finished. At your arrival, it is believed that we will be able, however, to give you a clear answer. You must have received yesterday or the day before, an issue of the Journal de Rouen which contains a great article on your work." In very good to fine condition, with an old mounting strip along the left edge of the signed side. Among Zola's early books was Contes à Ninon, or Tales of Ninon, published in 1864, and comprised of nine short stories that Zola began writing when he was 20 years old. A decidedly early letter from the famed French scribe.
