Scarce official color 8 x 10 NASA lithograph of Michel in a formal pose holding a rolled up magazine, signed and inscribed in black ballpoint, "To Jeanine…Best, F. C. Michel.” In fine condition. Recipient was an employee at the Los Angeles International Airport who assisted astronauts with picking up their GSA vehicles circa 1967.
Michel (1934-2015) was a professor of astrophysics at Rice University, a former United States Air Force pilot, and one of six astronauts selected as part of NASA Astronaut Group 4. He resigned from NASA in September 1969 without having being assigned to any spaceflight missions. Michel opted to resign when it became clear that he would not be given a flight assignment due to the scientific community's demands that his fellow astronaut, professional geologist Harrison Schmitt, be reassigned to Michel's position on Apollo 17 when Schmitt's originally assigned Apollo 18 mission was canceled.
