Description

Prince lays out suggestive lyrics for NPG's 'Johnny'

Prince's handwritten draft of the lyrics for "Johnny Hypnotize" in pencil, unsigned, one page, 8.5 x 10.5, no date. The lyrics, in full: "Tell me Tell me Tell me what am I suppose 2 do / I never had another granny look like u / Every time I see u girl my Johnny get hard / Harder than the handle on the rake in my yard / Harder than the brownstone brick on my house / If I ever, ever, ever get u into my mouth / I'd drink u like a 40 in an alcoholic's hand baby / Can't u understand / I'm only fantasizing cuz your love is tantalizing / And it's got me burnin’ rubber in my pants / But I don't wanna do u till I spend the time 2 school / ya on the fine art of romance - U got 2 know / How 2 make love 2 me, below and above me, In the back of my BMW, see the Bang Bang Boogie u will give it 2 me / cuz Johnny will make u dance.” In the upper right corner Prince adds, “Turn that shit off, kick that New Power shit,” and at the conclusion he writes: “Note: additional lyrics, get Tony’s rap from him.” In fine condition, with some creasing to the lower right corner area. From the collection of Prince's assistant Therese Stoulil and accompanied by a letter of provenance.

The evocatively titled ‘Johnny’ appeared on the New Power Generation’s 1993 debut studio album Goldnigga, a long out-of-print and considerably scarce recording that was available for purchase at a handful of concert venue merchandise stalls in 1993, through Prince's 1-800-NEW-FUNK telephone retail outlet, and at Paisley Park during the 2001 Celebration. The record’s fourteenth and longest track, running over some 10 minutes in length, the funky and hip hop-heavy ‘Johnny’ was led by the rapping of Tony M., and featured the earliest recording of Mr. Hayes in the studio. Prince played a background role in the album, with 'Johnny' one of the two tracks on which he lends his voice, the other being ‘Black M. F. in the House.’ From the Therese Stoulil Prince Collection.
