Popular and much admired emperor of Brazil who ruled for nearly sixty years (1825-1891). LS in Portuguese, signed “Imperador [Emperor],” one page, 9.5 x 11.5, March 30, 1878. Pedro II announces to the Provisional President of Costa Rica, General Tomas Guardia, the birth of his grandchild, Luis. In part (translated): "Dom Pedro Segundo, Constitutional Emperor and Perpetual Defender of Brazil, Sends Greetings to our Good Friend the Illustrious Provisional President of the Republic of Costa Rica, General Dom Tomas Guardia, [to]…inform you that my very Precious daughter, the Serene Imperial Princess Isabel, wife of His Royal Highness the Count of Eu, happily gave birth on the 26th of January, [to] a prince who received the Baptismal names of Luiz Maria Felippe Pedro d'Alcantara Gastao Miguel Gabriel Raphael Gonzaga.” Signed at the conclusion by Pedro as emperor and countersigned by Minister of Foreign Affairs Baron de Villa Bella. In very good to fine condition, with paper loss and binding holes to the left edge, and slight splitting along folds. Pedro II's grandchild, Prince Luis of Orleans-Braganza, himself became claimant to the former throne of the empire of Brazil, but went into exile following an 1899 coup d'etat.
