ALS in Italian, signed “P. Mascagni,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.25 x 7, June 17, 1897. In full (translated): "I warmly congratulate Mr. James William Buel on his book on the leading figures in music and on their works. The publication contains splendid insertions which represent the most interesting scenes of their melodramatic works. It also has pictures of all the Maestri, photographs that are very distinguished and good resemblances. And the text, written in various languages, is handsome and exact. I wish for Mr. Buel a true success with this publication which merits it because of the zeal, love and good will shown in this magnificent work." In fine condition. The work Mascagni references is likely The Great Operas: The Romantic Legends Upon which the Masters of Song Have Founded Their Famous Lyrical Compositions, which Buel published in 1889. Originally sold by Walter R. Benjamin Autographs, and accompanied by the invoice and paper folder, as well an unsigned portrait of the composer.
