American banker and philanthropist (1852-1938) remembered for endowing the George Foster Peabody Awards (commonly called the Peabody Awards), which honor great achievements in media. Partly-printed DS, signed twice, “Geo. Foster Peabody,” one page, 10.75 x 7, June 10, 1892. Stock certificate issued to Peabody for 100 shares of the St. Louis, Alton and Terre Haute Railroad Company, signed at the conclusion by Peabody as the company's president; also endorsed on the reverse by Peabody to transfer the shares to a trust. The certificate features a fine vignette of a train station. In fine condition, with cancellation holes affecting the signature on the front.
