Description

Notes with mathematical equations handwritten by Crick four years after he received the Nobel Prize

Unsigned handwritten notes by Francis Crick, six pages on four sheets, 6.75 x 9, dated August 3-7, 1966, from Crick’s nautical logbook used onboard his Bertram powerboat named the Eye of Heaven. The notes document his travels around Greece, noting times of arrival and departure, and track his fuel and oil levels. Among the destinations listed are "Egina," "Palaia Epidavros," "Saronic Gulf," "Aegean," "Poros," and "Hydra." He makes some observations on the water and weather, for example, "very calm (!)" and "heavy swell." In monitoring his fuel usage, he writes some fractions ("1/3 below 'full'") and does addition to determine how much he needs ("between 1/4 + 1/2 = 3/8 = need ~38…read = 16 need ~24, need ~62, ask for 60 gallons"). In overall fine condition. These notes date to just four years after Crick received the Nobel Prize for his discovery of DNA.
