Description

Scarce presidential military commission

Rare partly-printed vellum DS as president, signed “Z. Taylor,” one page, 14 x 17.75, March 20, 1850. President Taylor appoints William E. Prince as “Captain in the First Regiment of Infantry in the service of the United States.” Boldly signed at the conclusion by President Taylor and countersigned by Secretary of War George W. Crawford. The crisply embossed white paper seal affixed to the upper left remains fully intact. In very good to fine condition, with areas of light toning. Captain William Edgar Prince, a distinguished career officer from Massachusetts, served in the Second Seminole War, Mexican–American War, Civil War, and on the Northwestern frontier. Any Taylor presidential document is quite uncommon, as he served only 16 months before he died suddenly on July 9, 1850; this example boasts an ideally bold, crisp signature. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
