Controversial army officer (1804–1875) who did not get along well with Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton; President Johnson attempted to replace Stanton with Thomas without support of Congress, which was the reason behind his impeachment. Original 2.5 x 4 carte–de–visite bust-length portrait of Thomas in uniform, signed in black ink, “L. Thomas, Bvt. Major General & Adjutant General, U. S. A.” Published by F. Gutekunst Photography of Philadelphia. In fine condition, with areas of irregular ink adhesion. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
