Description

Civil War Artifacts

Small collection of Civil War relics and artifacts, including a Union belt plate, Union button, and six excavated small arms projectiles. First is a die-struck US oval belt plate, excavated from the battlefield at Winchester, Virginia, in dug relic condition with radiating cracks around the edges and an overall mottled brown patina. The back of the plate has most of the original lead filling remaining with the addition of a large, hand carved “H” initial between the stud and the arrowhead fasteners. Second is a single die-struck, domed, US general service eagle button with “Scovill Mfg. Co., Waterbury” back mark, in fine condition with a dark ochre-brown patina that darkens along the inner lip of the back portion. Finally is the ammunition group, which includes: a pair of unfired, two-groove .52 caliber Minie balls; a single unfired, triple-groove .52 caliber Minie ball; a conical Minie type bullet with damaged base; a single .63 caliber round musket ball; and a single unfired, conical .44 caliber revolver bullet. In overall very good to fine condition.
