American novelist (1894–1961) best known for detective and mystery classics such as The Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man. Valentine’s Day card depicting a woman on the front and a man inside, both characters holding red hearts, measuring 10.5 x 3.5 open, signed in the heart held by the man in fountain pen, “Dash.” Printed next to the illustration is the text “From a Boy in the Aleutians,” which Hammett humorously modified to read “From a Goy in the Aleutians.” Uniform toning, chipping to edges, and a couple letters of the signature a shade light, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, postmarked February 7, 1944. Hammett enlisted in the US Army after the attack on Pearl Harbor and sent this while serving as a sergeant in the Aleutian Islands, where he edited an Army newspaper. Scarce in general, this is a particularly interesting format. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
