Desirable bank check, 6.25 x 2.75, filled out in another hand and signed by Hemingway, “Ernest M. Hemingway,” payable to the bearer for $75, January 19, 1951. Endorsed on the reverse by Roberto Herrera. In fine condition, with expected bank stamps and cancellation holes (stamps lightly affecting portions of the signature). Herrera was Hemingway’s close friend, part-time secretary, and brother of his Cuban doctor; he frequently accompanied the writer on his exploits aboard the famous fishing boat Pilar. While in Cuba during 1951 Hemingway wrote one of his most famous works, The Old Man and the Sea, which was inspired by his own marlin fishing trips. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
