American naval admiral (1806–1863) who commanded the Mississippi River Squadron during the Civil War. After his promotion to rear admiral, Foote was on his way to take command of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron when he died en route on June 26, 1863. War-dated ALS signed “A. H. Foote, Flag Officer, U. S. Navy,” one page, lightly-lined, 5 x 8, June 28, 1862. Letter to Joseph Bright. In full: “I comply with your request of June 23rd, but it is a question perhaps which of us will first ‘go hence’ notwithstanding you seem determined to send me in advance of you to the better world.” In fine condition.
