American writer and diplomat (1819–1891) who, after a long and successful career as a poet, satirist, and essayist, served as minister to the court of Spain. ALS signed “J. R. Lowell,” one page, 5 x 7.75, June 25, 1877. Letter to “Mr. Houghton.” In part: “I have just been sitting to Warren, but know not yet if the likeness will be a good one.” Slight separation to lower mailing fold, light overall toning, and some mirroring to ink, otherwise fine condition.
