American writer and diplomat (1819–1891) who, after a long and successful career as a poet, satirist, and essayist, served as minister to the court of Spain. ALS signed “J. R. Lowell,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, personal letterhead, July 10, 1888. Letter to “Mrs. Henschel.” In part: “The moment I was able to stand I sent to Elliot [sic] & Fry for some photographs & found they had none…Should the photographs arrive in time, I will send them.” In fine condition.
