Description

The ironclad inventor acknowledges a sent portrait of a woman: “It is decidedly the best photograph I have ever received. The light thrown on the upper lip produces a charming effect”

Swedish-American Army engineer (1803–1889) who designed and built the ironclad warship Monitor for the American Navy. ALS, two pages, lightly-lined on two adjoining sheets, 5.28 x 8.25, New York, December 4, 1888. Letter to Mrs. Bull. In part: “I am delighted with the portrait of Miss Olea which you have kindly forwarded. It is decidedly the best photograph I have ever received. The light thrown on the upper lip produces a charming effect; and while doing full justice to the fair subject, it also proves the artist to be master of his profession…I cannot omit to mention that I am favored with robust health and that my works in hand are the most important of my life.” In fine condition. A quaint letter from the important inventor, written only a few months before his passing. RR Auction COA.
