Description

President McKinley offers payment in the midst of his administration

American Security and Trust bank check, 7 x 3, filled out in another hand and signed by McKinley, as president, “William McKinley,” payable to James F. Oyster for $54.23, January 31, 1899. Archivally cloth matted and framed, with a portrait of McKinley to an overall size of 14.5 x 18.5. In fine condition, with cancellation holes to body slightly affecting tops of a few letters of signature, bank stamp near top, and a small unobtrusive tear to left side. Oyster, the check’s recipient, was a prominent Washington merchant and later a Washington, D.C. school commissioner. The year 1899 proved to be a tricky one for McKinley, who was forced to contend with the onset of the Philippine-American War as well as the US occupation of Cuba, which began the first day of January. This is a desirable check from the assassinated chief executive. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
