English naturalist and author (1809–1882) whose book explaining his theories of evolution, On the Origin of the Species by Means of Natural Selection (1859), takes a place among the most influential texts in the history of scientific thought. Bold ink signature and sentiment, “I remain yours—Chas. Darwin, Wednesday, Spring Gardens,” on a light gray 4.5 x 2.5 slip, clipped from the closing of a letter. Darwin stayed at 17 Spring Gardens in 1831, shortly before his historic expedition on the HMS Beagle. Ink notations to bottom, small area of repaired paper loss to blank area under signature, a bit of light toning and soiling, and light show-through from postmark on reverse, otherwise fine condition. A visually appealing example from a pivotal point in Darwin’s life. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
