Description

Harrison makes an earnest request for the release of his last Apple album

ALS signed “George,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Frenchman’s Cove—Jamaica, the West Indies letterhead, no date, but “Tuesday,” written at the top in Harrison’s hand. Letter to Al, making reference to his new album, undoubtedly Extra Texture (Read All About It). In full, “I have forgotten about my Album in England (with me not being there) - could you check with George Peckham and Jack Oliver and make sure it is released over there, as soon as possible, and also as similar in content and quality to the American version. I suppose it is all being taken care of—but just in case we all forgot about it I thought I’d remind you (Its such a small place!) Hope all is going well in N.Y. and not as rainy as Jamaica. See you around the 24th November.”

Extra Texture (Read All About It) was Harrison's last album under his contract with Apple Records (and also the last studio album on Apple Records). A contractually obligated album, it was released with a thick and heavily textured orange cover (hence its title). This album was better received than his previous Dark Horse album by the critics, though it was still considered slightly below par by the general public. Harrison himself would later designate the album as his worst. Jack Oliver was the head of Apple Records, who left the company in order to become head of Dark Horse Records. Peckham mastered the album, and is widely recognized as among the most accomplished in the business, as he was responsible for producing the master discs from which countless vinyl records have been pressed over the last 40 years. Letter is housed in a leather presentation folder, with several Sotheby’s auction labels affixed to the inside sleeve. In very good condition, with scattered toning from adhesive on reverse affecting corners and about 10 words in the center portion of text, but not the signature or the overall bold legibility of all Harrison’s writing.
