American artist and illustrator (1877–1960) best known for his iconic image of Uncle Sam saying “I Want You” on a World War I recruiting poster. Fabulous and rare unsigned artist’s pencil and watercolor artwork on an 8.5 x 11 off-white sheet entitled “Week-End at Ray Schindler’s.” Detailed work shows the back of a well-built man in a cowboy hat and bathing suit ( labeled “Tex O’Rourke,” by Flagg), embracing a buxom dark-haired woman clad in thigh-high stockings and purple panties (labeled “Lady he knows (Umph!),” and the artist pouting in the background his head dejectedly in his hands as flies and mosquitoes buzz about, again labeled in Flagg’s hand, “Me (Poop!) Flies and mosquitoes, am allergic in old age.” Ray Schindler may be noted detective Raymond Schindler, while the Tex O’Rourke referred to may quite possibly be Tex O’Rourke, one of the most flamboyant personalities of this century. O'Rourke's career read like something out of the vivid, fanciful imagination of a Hollywood script writer. He had been a Texas Ranger, a soldier of fortune, a boxer, a writer, a painter, a sports promoter, a radio commentator, and a master of ceremonies at prominent social functions. In fine condition, with light intersecting folds, and some scattered light toning. A much more colorful and risque Flagg artwork than usually seen, leaving no doubt as to his particular mood and feelings at the time of creation. RRAuction COA.
