Description

Maxim Gorki

Important Russian/Soviet author and activist (1868–1936). Though his criticism of the Communist government led to a relationship marked by conflict and unease, he was ultimately embraced (though closely monitored) by the Stalinist regime, and Stalin himself was a pallbearer at Gorki’s funeral. Scarce 6.75 x 10.25 cardstock photo, an image of the seated, middle-aged author within an elaborate printed border that includes a vignette of a hammer and sickle, signed and inscribed in ink, in Russian, “To Tatyana, with best regards, M. Gorki.” In very good, visually appealing condition, with light all over soiling, corner bends (which can be matted out), and scattered rubs to image, the signature and inscription remaining clear, dark, and well-contrasted. RRAuction COA.
