TLS signed “F.D.R.,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Roosevelt and O’Connor letterhead, May 9, 1925. Signed just three short years before he became Governor of New York—certainly the catalyst to his important political career—and while undergoing treatment at Warm Springs, Georgia, Roosevelt sent this letter to his law partner, Basil O’Connor. In part, Roosevelt informs: “Have you sent Goldman a bill? The retainer of $5000 is payable quarterly beginning last January 1st, and is to include only general advice. Any special matters, such as suits, etc should, of course, be extra. The legs are getting on finely and I can put my weight on them standing up in 2 inches less water than last fall. This represents a gain of 10 or 15 pounds.” Then, in his own hand, Roosevelt adds, “weight on the knees.” The letter continues on to note: “Tell John it must be ‘the divil’ to be mixed up with New York City politics. He had better move up to Duchess County if he wants any piece of mind.” The future president—who, as previously stated, soon found himself “mixed up with New York City politics”—signed the letter “F.D.R,” which remains bold and fluid despite very minor interference from an intersecting fold. The “John” referred to was likely Basil’s brother, John O’Connor, a Tammany Hall politician. This O’Connor was a longtime member of Congress whose tenure as a Capitol Hill mainstay came to an end when FDR sought to purge all opponents of his “New Deal” during his presidency.
