ALS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, September 24, 1845. Group of two letters, one from Charles Dickens, and one written by his wife Catherine, but signed for her husband, Charles Dickens, ALS, signed “Charles Dickens, two pages on two adjoining sheets, dated September 24, 1845. Letter to T. J. Serle, in full: “I was in managerial agonies at the Theatre all day on Saturday; and did not receive your letter until a very short time before the curtain rose. I am extremely sorry you were not there, as I really counted on your worship’s presence; setting a high value on your opinion. I waited and waited on behalf of Mr. Novello, thinking it certain that out of more than five hundred people, some would send their tickets back, at the last moment. But it never came to pass. And I was powerless.”; and an ALS, written by Catherine Dickens, but signed “Charles Dickens, one page, 4.5 x 7, dated September 16, 1845. Writing again to his manager T. J. Serle. In full: “There will probably be many carriages in Dean Street on Saturday night; and the half hour mentioned in the bill as the time for sitting down is so very short, that the door will be opened at half past 6, instead of seven, you will certainly be more comfortable.” Dickens was presenting Ben Johnson’s play entitled “Every Man in His Humor” at Miss Kelly’s Theatre, with Dickens also assuming the role of stage-manager. The Dickens ALS from September was also published in The Letters of Charles Dickens, Pilgrim Edition (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1978). Intersecting folds to both, some light toning to Catherine’s letter, spotting to first page of Charles’s letter, as well as a partial separation along connecting fold, otherwise fine condition.
