“HE BEARS THE ANGUISH OF A WORLD”: STOWE pens a stirring inspirational quotation from UNCLE TOM’S CABIN

Distinguished author (1811–1896) whose epochal 1852 novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin brought the issue of slavery to the fore of American consciousness and became one of the classics of 19th-century literature. AQS on an off-white 6 x 8 album page, signed “Harriet Beecher Stowe, Feby. 9th, 1894.” An extract from Chapter 12 of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. In full: “Not one throb of anguish/Not one tear of the oppressed/Is forgotten by the Man of/Sorrows the Lord of Glory./In his patient generous bosom/he bears the anguish of a world.” Light scattered toning and soiling, horizontal fold, and a few small stains (lightly touching first letter of signature and a few words of text), otherwise fine condition.
