To a “friend of civil & religious liberty”

Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Maryland (1737–1832) who was the last survivor among his colleagues. ANS signed “Charles Carroll of Carrollton,” one page, 7 x 3, December 6, 1828. Carroll writes to an unnamed recipient. In full: “Admired [illegible], friend of civil & religious liberty, I esteem your virtues, and actuated by the same feelings shall I be deemed arrogant by placing the name under yours of….” Accompanied by an antique portrait engraving. Toning to central portion of sheet (touching first part of signature), otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
