Description

Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Massachusetts (1744–1814) who later served as vice president under James Madison. His name entered the language as a result of his support of politically advantageous redistricting, which became known as “gerrymandering.” Franking signature, “Free, E. Gerry,” on a 4.25 x 2.5 slip clipped from a mailing panel addressed to an indistinctly penned recipient in Boston. In very good condition, with creases and small tears, a hint of subtle toning, and light wrinkling and handling wear (chip to one corner). The signature itself is clean and unaffected. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
