Union general (1816–1894) who led forces at Shenandoah, Red River, and elsewhere. Prior to the Civil War, he served as Governor of Massachusetts and Speaker of the U. S. House of Representatives. Two items: partly printed DS as governor, signed “Nath. P. Banks,” three pages, 10.5 x 16.5, April 30, 1860. An appointment for Chester Crafts as Justice of the Peace; and a free-franked mailing envelope, addressed in another hand to Abraham Leasing, franked in the upper right, “Free N. P. Banks, mc.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds (vertical fold touching last name; partial separations and small tears, away from signature), and a couple light brushes to franking signature.
