As a college student he learned to fly in the Civilian Pilot Training program; at the age of 20 he became a flying cadet in the US Army Air Corps, in time for the entry of America into World War II. Bong became America's all-time Ace of Aces, downing 40 enemy planes in the Pacific theater of the war while flying P-38 fighter planes. His many decorations for outstanding skills and extraordinary courage included the Congressional Medal of Honor. Empty cloth-covered three-ring binder, 9.75 x 11.5, owned and used by Bong during his college years sometime between 1938-1941. Inside of front cover bears over thirty mathematical equations (algebra and calculus), all in Bong’s hand, as well as several mathematical definitions. Inside of back cover bears a dozen lines of analytical geometry in ink and pencil, as well as several pencil doodles along right edge. Inside back cover also bears a Bong signature written in another hand. Cover is labeled “Superior State Teacher’s College,” and bears two geometric doodles, as well as a man’s profile. Accompanied by correspondence from Bong’s sister to the notebook’s recipient, attesting to the binder having been found in Bong’s closet. Scattered soiling and toning, several cracks and separations, cover lifting off both inside edges, and moderate wear and fraying to cloth covers, otherwise very good condition. Rare offering of this American hero. RRAuction COA.
