Third-person ALS signed in the text “Mr. Charles Dickens” and “Mr. Dickens,” one page, 4.25 x 7, Gad’s Hill letterhead, December 22, 1866. In full: “Mr. Charles Dickens presents his compliments to Mr. Bell, and begs his kind acceptance of the enclosed cheque in aid of the objects of the Glasgow Bazaar. Absence prevented Mr. Dickens from receiving Miss Hingston’s circular letter in time to forward one of his books for the sale there, as requested.” The same letter is fully documented and excerpted in The Letters of Charles Dickens (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2002, p. 286). The event Dickens alludes to, the Fever Convalescent Home and Children’s Bazaar, was a charitable effort that raised some £5,300. Matted with an antique portrait engraving to an overall size of 18 x 13.25. A touch of mild soiling, and a few small stains to blank lower portion, otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
