American military and entrepreneur (1839–1898) who led at Chickamauga and elsewhere and was captured by Nathan Bedford Forrest in 1864. Following the war, he resumed his trade as a druggist and founded the still-extant Eli Lilly Company, which became one of the largest pharmaceutical concerns in the world.
