Description

HEALER AMONG SOLDIERS: LINCOLN appoints a prominent research surgeon to the Army

Partly printed DS as president, one page on vellum, 13.75 x 17.75, August 8, 1861. An appointment for F. H. Hamilton as Brigade Surgeon of Volunteers. Countersigned by Thomas A. Scott as Acting Secretary of War. Hamilton, a professor of military surgery and hygiene at Belleview Hospital Medical College and Long Island College Hospital, wrote widely in his field, including A Treatise on Military Surgery and Hygiene (1863), as well as the frighteningly titled article “Gunshot Wounds of the Penis” (1864). In fine condition, with intersecting folds (horizontal fold just touching bottom of “A”), a light marginal crease or two, and a few spots of minor, very unobtrusive soiling. The embossed pink paper seal remains intact at upper left. A handsome example! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
