Informing a mother of her soldier boy’s death

German field marshal (1891–1944) who earned the sobriquet “The Desert Fox” for his tactical genius as Commander of the Afrika Korps. In 1944 he was implicated in a plot to assassinate Hitler; given the choice of suicide or a trial, he ended his own life with poison. TLS, in German, signed in indelible black pencil “Rommel,” one page, 8.25 x 6.5, June 16, 1939. Rommel informs Frau Wolff of the death of her son, Heinrich, in a training exercise. Light vertical fold (lightly touching “R”) and tear to top left edge (tape-repaired from reverse), otherwise fine, clean condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
