ALS in Hindi, in pencil, signed twice “Mohandas” (the second signature following the postscript), one page both sides, 5 x 8, Gandhi’s “Advocate” business letterhead, January 17, 1899. Gandhi, then a lawyer in Durban, South Africa, writes to “Harakhchand.” In part (translated): “Please refrain from conveying any news of Raliyat. I wrote to Revashankerbhai in Bombay as soon as I heard about Chi. Fooli. However, it seems that he had left for Rajkot then. What more sympathy can I offer? One must bear all unhappiness that comes one’s way, there is no way out. I have not spoken of the news to Chi. Goka. He is fine and is studying.... At times he thinks of coming there. He is a jewel to me and I do not let him worry about anything. Please take care of all the difficulties and if I can be of any help, do write. Consider brother as an elderly person and please do not feel bad of anything he does; please excuse him and consider sister-in-law as mother. Look after her—this is your duty.... I am unable to do anything from here if people take away the jewelry. If writing to Revashankerbhai helps, write to him from there, as he will help.... I am rather upset that Haridasbhai and Shivlalbhai have not replied. Tell them this....” After signing, Gandhi adds a postscript: “What will happen to me and where I will be tomorrow, I cannot say. Do write to me.” In very good condition overall, with two horizontal folds (one through first signature; a few edge separations, one near but not touching signature), mild soiling with a few tiny spots (one just touching second signature), and a few tiny marginal chips affecting no text.
