Description

Prominent American explorer, military officer, and politician (1813–1890) who mapped the Oregon Trail, played a prominent part in conquering California during the Mexican War, and ran in 1856 as the first Republican presidential candidate. War-date ALS signed “J. C. Frémont,” one lightly lined page, 7.75 x 9.5, Head-Quarters, Mountain Department letterhead, April 14, 1862. Frémont writes from Wheeling to General Pomeroy. In full: “Until we can get Colonel B— a position on the line will you endeavor to get him a position on the staff? He is very useful to me and I know no other way of retaining his services. Pray let me know immediately if it can be done and obliged….” Accompanied by an unsigned period portrait engraving. A few faint marginal smudges, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
