Partially printed DS, signed “J. Tyler,” one page on vellum, 9 x 6.5, January 25, 1840. A commission for Henry O. Porter as midshipman in the U.S. Navy. The embossed paper seal remains intact at lower left. Matted with a 19th-century engraving to an overall size of 15.75 x 19.5. In very good condition, with scattered soiling, wrinkling (lightly touching signature), vertical folds, and a few spots to blank portions. The signature is large and dark.
