Description

Victoria appoints counsel for an alleged felon

Monarch of Queen of Great Britain and Ireland from 1837 until her death in 1901. Her more than sixty-three years on the throne remains unmatched in the history of Great Britain and places her among the longest-reigning monarchs of any nation in modern times. The unprecedented growth and prosperity of the British Empire under her rule—as well as a strangely prescient public fascination with the queen and her family—made her one of the most celebrated public figures of her day, and her name would become synonymous with an entire age. DS, signed “Victoria R,” three pages, 8 x 12, January 10, 1872. Victoria appoints legal council for Michael Mayer whose “trial at the issuing sessions of the Central Criminal Court…upon a charge of felony - and the petitioner being desirous of advising with Edward Vaughn Kenealy, Esquire and of Our consel learned in the law who may be very useful to the Petitioner in defending the Petitioner on the trial of the indictment of stealing fifty Peruvian bonds.” Signed at the top of the first page by Victoria. Matted and framed, by Goodspeed’s Book Shop, the legendary Boston bookshop where it was once offered for sale, so all pages are visible, with a portrait of Victoria, to an overall size of 19.25 x 18. In fine condition, with slight show-through from text on reverse and light toning around seals. R&R COA.
