Pierce grants Buchanan “full power” as tensions mount over Central America

DS as president, one page, 8 x 7.5, September 12, 1853. President Pierce directs the Secretary of State “to affix the Seal of the United States to a full power for Mr. Buchanan to treat with Great Britain concerning Central American matters.” Double matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Buchanan, to an overall size of 20.25 x 13. Pierce aroused sectional apprehension when he pressured the United Kingdom to relinquish its special interests along part of the Central American coast, and when he tried to persuade Spain to sell Cuba for $100 million because of the expansive sugar crop in Cuba. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, with one horizontal fold through signature. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
