Description

Describing Jefferson and Mussolini as “better authors than Mrs. Lowndes or A. Huxley”

ALS signed “E.P.,” two pages, 8.5 x 11, personal “portrait” letterhead, no date [circa 1936]. Pound writes to artist and papermaker Douglass Howell. In full: “Yr. mother thinks my Jefferson/Mussolini gt. selling stuff. (Pictorial Review or some big paying sheet.) Will send it when it comes back from typist. Pollinger of C/Brown thinks ‘Cannoni’ will easily go in Eng.—but his N.Y. man wd., I suppose, take it over if they place it in London before you put it across. I chose Chap. VIII as indicating the author’s more understanding than their Democratic Controll [sic] pubctns. Does Collins expect to get good anything (snapshots etc.) Who’s payin’ for ’em?? I don’t suppose he cd. pay enough for the Jeff./Mussolini = both of ’em better authors than Mrs. Lowndes [British novelist Marie Adelaide Belloc Lowndes], or A. Huxley. Collins prob. scard of anything full-strength.” Pound published a collection of essays on politics and economics titled Jefferson and/or Mussolini in 1936. Pinholes with tiny rust stains to blank margin and a few edge tears with expert archival repairs, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
