American soldier (1839–1925) who earned a niche in military history as the only man to serve as an officer in the Civil War, Indian Wars, and Spanish-American War. Though the nearly eighty-year-old Miles volunteered to serve during World War I, his offer was declined by Woodrow Wilson. Ink signature, “Nelson A. Miles, Br. Major Genl., U.S. Vols.,” on an off-white 4 x 2.5 card. Accompanied by a handsome unsigned program/menu from a banquet given in Miles’ honor at the Waldorf-Astoria on November 11, 1898. A very subtle suggestion of soiling to card and mild toning to program, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
